Angry Family Member Move Out Of Your Home? 2 Changes To Make To Keep You Safe

Blog

If you had a family member that lived with you and they got angry and moved out, you never know what they are going to do. Even if they are family they could still try to cause damage or maybe even steal from you. Fortunately, there are many changes you can make to keep everything and everyone safe, two of which are listed below.

Rekey Your Home

The first thing you should do is hire a locksmith that offers rekeying services. When a locksmith rekeys a lock, they remove the springs and pins in the current lock and then replaces them with new springs and pins. The locksmith may lubricate the news springs and pins to make inserting and removing your new keys much easier.

They will then give you and your other family members your new keys. This is because your old key will not work any longer.  Ask the locksmith to rekey all locks that take the same key including any garage keys, sun rooms, etc.  Throw your old keys away or give them to the locksmith to dispose of.

When the locksmith arrives at your home they will first examine all locks. There may be times they will suggest replacing the entire locking system if it is very old and looks worn out.

Change Passcode on Security System

If you have a security system installed for your home, make sure you change the passcode. Even though your family member could not get through your door they still could get through a window or other opening. This way they would not be able to turn off the alarm. They would leave quickly because they would know authorities were on the way.

How you change the passcode depends on the type of home security system you have. In many cases, you go to the settings on the display control and find the passcode section. You have to put in your current passcode to prove that it is you that is changing the password.

Once you enter in the current passcode a field will open for you to enter a new passcode. Once you get it changed try it out to ensure it is working properly. If you have problems, contact your home security company and they can walk you through the steps.

Talk with the locksmith you hire about your situation. They can suggest other things you should do to prevent your angry family member from breaking into your home.

Choosing Better Door Hardware

We looked at our broken locks, figured out where we went wrong, and immediately started working with a locksmith to correct the issue. It was amazing to see what a great difference we were able to make. The locksmith came out, replaced our old, damaged locks with an electronic version, and taught us how to use the system. This blog is all about your different door lock options, so that you understand how to keep your home safe.
