3 Different Types Of Locks You Can Use On Your Storage Unit

Blog

When you rent a storage unit, the storage unit generally requires you to provide your own lock. They have you provide your own lock so that you know that you are the only one who has access to the lock and the storage area. This is a matter of security for both you and for the storage unit company. When it comes to padlocks, you actually have a few different options of locks you can pick up at your local locksmith for your storage unit.

Type #1: Steel Padlock with Key

If you want to go for a really strong padlock that will be really difficult to cut through, go with a steel padlock with a key. A steal padlock that opens with a key may seem like a simple lock, but it is a strong option that will get the job done. Just make sure that you keep track of the key, because if you lose the key, you'll lose access to your unit. With a steel padlock that requires a key to open, it can be a smart idea to get a copy of the key made. You should keep the back-up key in a different location than the primary key.

Type #2: Bluetooth Padlock

Next, if you want a smart lock, you can go with a Bluetooth lock. With a Bluetooth lock, you will have to have a cell phone with the relevant app on it that will send a signal to unlock the lock via a Bluetooth connection. This requires the lock to maintain an electrical output as well, so it can receive the Bluetooth signal. Most Bluetooth locks come with a built-in battery, as well as a slot where you can plug in a temporary battery if the primary battery fails. This is a great option if you don't tend to lose your cellphone and you always keep your cellphone on you.

Type #3: Standard Combination Lock

Finally, you can use a standard combination lock. A standard combination lock may actually be the best type of lock to use. You don't have to rely on having a key or a charged cell phone to open up the lock. You just have to remember the combination.

Additionally, a standard combination lock would be really difficult for someone to break into, as they would need to figure out the exact combination out of almost limitless possibilities.

A steel padlock with a key is a really strong lock that no one will be able to break into unless they have the key. A Bluetooth lock adds another level of security to your padlock. A classic, standard combination lock is always a good idea as long as you remember the combination and don't write the combination on the lock itself. If you are not sure what type of lock to use still, talk to your local locksmith. They will be able to help you select the best possible lock for your storage unit.

Choosing Better Door Hardware

After our home was vandalized when we were away on vacation, I realized that we really needed to spend a little money to update our door locks and hardware. We looked at our broken locks, figured out where we went wrong, and immediately started working with a locksmith to correct the issue. It was amazing to see what a great difference we were able to make. The locksmith came out, replaced our old, damaged locks with an electronic version, and taught us how to use the system. This blog is all about your different door lock options, so that you understand how to keep your home safe.
