Buying A Home? Know How A Locksmith Can Make It More Secure

Blog

Moving into a new home can be quite overwhelming with everything that needs to be done. While you may want to get going on unpacking and decorating, it's just as important to contact a locksmith as soon as the home is in your possession. Here are a few key things that a locksmith can do for you as you move into your new home.

Rekeying Locks

You never know who still has a set of keys from when the previous owner had possession of the home. There may be a dog walker that didn't return their spare key or a neighbor that saw where a hidden key is still located outside the home. That's why you should hire a locksmith to rekey the existing locks.

The rekeying process involves a locksmith disassembling the lock and removing all of the pins, and then inserting new pins that align with a new key. It allows you to retain all of the existing locks in your home with matching hardware and even makes all of your exterior locks work with a single key. This adds some much-needed convenience for opening your exterior doors since you no longer need to figure out which key works with each lock.

Adding Deadbolts

Are there exterior doors that do not have a deadbolt? Only having knob locks is not an ideal solution for exterior doors, since they can be broken into with relative ease with a hammer. However, many people are not comfortable with the process of adding a deadbolt to an exterior door on their own. You essentially have one shot to get it right with all of the holes that need to be made for a new deadbolt.

A locksmith is capable of adding deadbolts to your exterior doors, even if they are made out of thick material. You'll also get assistance with selecting the right type of deadbolt that will add some much-needed security. For instance, you'll learn about the differences between an ANSI Grade 1 and Grade 2 deadbolt, and what can make it worth upgrading to the stronger option of the two.

Installing Safes

A safe does not provide you with much security if someone can easily remove it from your house. That's why you'll want to hire a locksmith to help select and install a new safe in your home for anything that you want to keep secure. This includes things like firearms, jewelry, cash, and even important documents.

There are a few different methods that can be used to install a safe, with it being attached to your home or placed within a floor or wall. Consult with your locksmith about where would be the best place to install a safe based on the construction of your home and your specific needs. For example, you may want a safe hidden in the bedroom so that you have easy access to it.
